Who do you worship (Revelation 5)

Revelation 5 contains one of my favorite passages of Scripture. Today we see people worshiping every created thing in heaven, on the earth, and under the earth. We see people worshiping ideologies, old and new. But in the end who will everyone worship?

In Revelation 4, the focus was on the throne of God. In Revelation 5, the focus zooms in to what is in God's right hand, a scroll with 7 seals with writing on the front and back.

We are not told what is in the scroll; that is not the focus. The focus is on who is able to open the scroll. John becomes overcome with grief because no one is worthy to open the scroll:

Revelation 5:3-4 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. [4] I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside it.

There is no created being who has ever lived who is worthy to stand before the throne of God and take what is in His hand.

However, Jesus is worthy. He is worthy to stand before God the Father and take the scroll.

Why? Three reasons actually:

1) Jesus is not a created being. Jesus is God Himself who took on human flesh.

John 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. [2] He was in the beginning with God. [3] All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

2) Jesus defeated sin. He was tempted by every kind of sin and yet never sinned.

Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.

3) Jesus defeated death. He was put to death for our sins but defeated death when He rose again.

Acts 2:24 But God released Him from the horrors of death and raised Him back to life, for death could not keep Him in its grip.

So Jesus, depicted as a slain Lamb because of the price He paid for our sins, stands before the throne of God and takes the scroll and every created thing in heaven falls down and worships Him:

Revelation 5:8 And when He (Jesus) took the scroll, the four living beings and the 24 elders fell down before the Lamb.

That's the prelude. But then John also gets to see a vision of the great finale which will take place after this current Church Age, after the future 7-year Tribulation, after the Millennial Reign of Jesus on this earth, and after the Great White Throne judgment.

At that point, every single created thing, no matter where their final resting place is, will worship God the Father and Jesus, God the Son, the Lamb who was slain for our sins:

Revelation 5:13-14 And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying, "To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever." [14] And the four living creatures kept saying, Amen." And the elders fell down and worshiped.

Dear Lord, Thank you for loving us and waiting for us to repent and turn to You even after we have turned away and worshiped created things rather than You, Our Creator. Thank you for loving us and waiting for us to repent even when we worship ridiculous manmade ideologies focused on our selfish pride rather than falling on our knees before You in humility and repentance. Lord, thank you for loving us enough to give every person every chance to repent and turn to You until their very last breath in this world. Lord, You are a most loving God worthy of all of our worship and all of our praise, not just in the end, but every day before then. Lord, today and every day, I choose to worship You alone. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
