Who are you a doulos of? (Revelation 1)

The term "doulos" literally means bond-slave, someone who belongs to another without any ownership rights of their own. In our society, "slave" has horrible, unjust meaning. But in Biblical times, "bond-slave" was a badge of honor, used with the highest dignity.

So as we look at the word, "doulos" in the New Testament, that's the context we want to understand; someone who willingly belongs to another without any ownership rights of their own as a badge of honor of the highest dignity.

In the early church, those who repented of their sins and trusted in Jesus as the Lord God of their lives, living under His authority in every aspect, proudly referred to themselves as a "doulos of the Lord Jesus Christ."

James and Jude, listed in Matthew 13:55-56 as Jesus' brothers, did not see themselves worthy to be called Jesus' brothers in the New Testament epistles which they authored.

Instead they referred to themselves as Jesus' bond-servants (doulos):

James 1:1 James, a bond-servant of the Lord Jesus Christ ..

Jude 1:1 Jude, a bond-servant of Jesus Christ ..

So what's the point? Two things, actually:

1) The book of the Revelation (the Revealing) of Jesus Christ is to show Jesus' bond-servants, His doulos, the things which must soon take place.

While there is certainly a lot of symbolism in Revelation, God is literally telling us "the things which must soon take place."

Revelation is telling the bond-servants (doulos) of the Lord Jesus Christ, about the judgments that will come upon those who refuse to turn to Him after the church age.

2) Who are you a doulos of? Who are you willingly submitting your life under the authority of? Who is on the throne of your life?

Is it you, someone else, or the Lord Jesus Christ?

There are many who claim the title "Christian," who refuse to be a doulos of the Lord Jesus Christ. What about you?

If your answer is that you are a doulos of the Lord Jesus Christ, He has written the book of Revelation for you, to tell you what is coming after He removes His doulos from this world.

Dear Lord, Today and every day I choose to live as a doulos of the Lord Jesus Christ, who willingly stepped off of His throne in heaven, took on human flesh, lived a sinless life, allowed those who were created in His image to disrespect Him, spit on Him, beat Him, flog Him, push a crown of thrones into his head, and nail Him to a cross so that all who choose to repent of their sins and become His doulos may receive the blessing of eternal life with Him. Dear Lord Jesus please fill me with Your Spirit so that others see You in me rather than my own selfish desires. In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Will you choose to be a doulos of the Lord Jesus Christ, today?
