Vow to the Lord (Num 30)

Many years ago when my husband was still my boyfriend and we were in college in different states, I was a new follower of Jesus and he had not yet given his life to Christ.

We had gotten in an argument and stopped talking for what seemed like days to me.

During that time I prayed two things. First, that God would not let us get back together unless he gave his life to Jesus. And second, that if he did give his life to Jesus and God brought us back together, that I would forever dedicate my life to living for Jesus every day.

I didn’t realize at the time that I was actually, making a vow before the Lord.

Num 30:2If a man makes a vow to the Lord, .. he shall not violate his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth

But, I have never forgotten that prayer, that promise, that vow, that I made that day and I am incredibly thankful that my husband chose to give his life to Jesus and that God chose to bring us back together and answer that prayer that day.

We are so far from perfect. We have both had times in our lives when we have forgotten our vows and put God on the back burner.

But I am so thankful that God, rich in mercy and abundant in grace, never put us on the back burner and kept His promise to love us, forgive us, and wait patiently for us to remember our vows and return to Him. What an incredibly loving God we serve!

Today my husband’s faith and dedication to living to honor Jesus is my daily reminder to honor that vow I made so many years ago and to also live to honor Jesus each day, even though we are both still completely imperfect and make mistakes along the way.

Lord, please protect us and help us remember our vows to You. Let us put You first in all things and live the rest of our lives serving You every day and seeking to bring You glory.
