Vengeance is Not Mine (Isaiah 37)

When someone severely wrongs you, what's your knee jerk reaction? Is it to lash out in anger, taking revenge on them, or waiting on the Lord, praying for them to turn to Him? What if God doesn't stop them but allows them to continue to wrong you? What then?

Have you ever felt like that? I think we all have. But how we respond to our enemies, those who are severely trying to wrong us shows whether our faith is real or just words.

I grew up in a non-Christian home. If you asked my parents about their faith, most of their life, they would say, "I'm a non-practicing Christian." To them that meant they believed in God but they didn't ever want to have a conversation about God. In other words, God was really no part of their lives.

Yet they tried to do what they believed was right and help those around them. But when it came to the hard things, like what to do when someone wronged them, they wanted to take matters into their own hands rather than trusting God as His Word clearly teaches us.

God tells us to trust Him to take revenge in His time and in His way while we love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us:

Romans 12:19 Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, "I will take revenge; I will pay them back," says the LORD.

Matthew 5:44 But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!

If our faith is real, we will obey God's command to "never take revenge" and instead love our enemies while trusting God's plan. This is not just a New Testament command. We are told the same thing in the Old Testament:

The Assyrians ruthlessly destroyed nation after nation. After taking Israel, the northern kingdom, into exile, they came to destroy Judah, the southern kingdom. But King Hezekiah of Judah prayed to the LORD and trusted in Him.

Because he prayed to the LORD, the LORD God rescued Judah from the Assyrians.

Isaiah 33:1 What sorrow awaits you Assyrians, who have destroyed others but have never been destroyed yourselves. You betray others, but you have never been betrayed. When you are done destroying, you will be destroyed. When you are done betraying, you will be betrayed.

Isaiah 37:10 This message is for King Hezekiah of Judah. Don't let your God, in whom you trust, deceive you with promises that Jerusalem will not be captured by the king of Assyrian.

Isaiah 37:21-24, 29 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent this message to Hezekiah: "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Because you prayed about King Sennacherib of Assyria, the LORD has spoken this word against him: The virgin daughter of Zion despises you and laughs at you. The daughter of Jerusalem shakes her head in derision as you flee. Whom have you been defying and ridiculing? Against whom did you raise your voice? At whom did you look with such haughty eyes? It was the Holy One of Israel! By your messengers you have defied the Lord. .. And because of your raging against Me and your arrogance, which I have heard for Myself, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth. I will make you return by the same road on which you came."

Now more than ever, we can understand how Judah must have felt when the Assyrians were threatening to destroy them. We have globalists advancing on all fronts to destroy our nation and usher in the One World Government, aka, the New World Order.

So what are we supposed to do about that? Very simply we are to pray to God for guidance and direction while trusting Him to take revenge in His time. We are also to pray that those who are seeking to bring our nation down would turn to Jesus while there is still time.

Dear Lord, Even in this, I trust You and Your plan. It's not for me to determine how long our nation will exist before the globalists are allowed to usher in the One World Government. Daniel 2:21 says You are the One who controls the course of world events, removes kings, and establishes kings. So Lord, while my selfish desire is for more time, I pray for your will to be done. Lord, I pray that these people who seek to destroy us would repent and come to You while there is still time. Lord, I pray that even today You would give me opportunities to share your gospel message of salvation with those who do not know you; those who do not see how everything is coming together just as You have prophesied through Your prophets, so long ago. Lord, regardless of your plan and your timeline, please strengthen me to shine your Light. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen
