True Valentine (John 3)

Today is a day that some people are showered with cards, candy, and flowers while others feel very much alone. But when we realize the gift God gave us and His desire for each of us to be His valentine, no other gift in this world can possibly compare.

I don't know who came up with this VALENTINE image of John 3:16, but I love its message and simplicity.

It reminds me that Jesus chose to take the cross for me, in spite of all of my flaws and imperfections so that I may have eternal life with Him. What an amazing gift! It's the best gift anyone could possibly receive.

All He asks in return is that I believe in Him. But what does it mean to believe in Jesus? What does saving belief look like?

Mark 1:24 and James 2:19 show us that even the demons "believe" in Jesus.

Mark 1:24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”

James 2:19 Even the demons believe and tremble.

The demons know exactly who Jesus is. They know that He is God who stepped off His throne in heaven, took on human flesh, and took our sins upon Himself on that cross so that we could be freed from the bondage of our sins. The demons know that just as Jesus was raised from the dead, those of us who repent and believe in Him will also be raised to new life.

But even though the demons believe in Jesus, they refuse to repent and obey Him. They refused to submit to Jesus and follow Him as their Lord. Instead they chose to turn away from Him and follow Satan.

The demons' belief is not saving belief.

But saving belief is the kind of belief John 3:16 is talking about. Whoever believes in Him (repents of their sin and follows Jesus as the Lord of their life) shall not perish but have eternal life.

Saving belief is not just words spoken or head knowledge. Saving belief results in our repentance of sin, submitting our lives to Jesus, and following Him as our Lord God.

Do you believe in Jesus?

Is your belief like the demons or like John 3:16?

Dear Lord, I pray that today, on this day that love is celebrated, we all remember that no one can understand what love is without You. You are true Love. You gave the ultimate gift for each one of us who choses to repent and trust in You as our Lord and savior. Lord I pray that today, we all ask ourselves the question, "is my belief in Jesus like the demons or like John 3:16?"
