The Truth Bomb (John 14)

John 14 is my favorite chapter of John, although many may disagree with my reason. Isaiah 53 is a chapter which is not read in Jewish synagogues because it points to Jesus. Likewise, John 14:6 is not read in many churches today because it points to the gospel.

Or maybe I should say, not all of John 14:6 is read in many Christian churches today, just the part that sounds acceptable to people, that tickles their ears:

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me."

You hear the first part even in popular Christian songs today; but not the second part of that verse, "no one comes to the Father but through Me."

People don't want to hear that part because it says Jesus is the only way to eternal life.

It's telling us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), meaning that we are forever separated from God with no hope for eternal life because we cannot earn it ourselves.

But then God, because of His amazing grace, stepped down out of heaven in human flesh as Jesus, lived a sinless life, and died on the cross to pay the debt of sin for all who choose to repent and trust in Jesus' sacrifice in their place.

The second part of John 14:6 states the gospel in the converse to make sure we get the consequences. Those who refuse to repent and trust in Jesus' sacrifice in their place will not be with Jesus in heaven but eternally separated from Him in hell.

If we know the way, the truth, and the life, and don't share the consequence of the choice, is that truly loving people and obeying Jesus?

Is it obeying Him to just share the first part that sounds good to people but leave off the second part that He thought was important enough to share?

Jesus wants us to know the truth so much that He promises to send the Spirit of God to explain it to all who choose to obey Him:

John 14:15-17 [15] If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. [16] I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; [17] that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.

The world is not interested in the truth, the full gospel message. They don't want to hear it. In fact they will complain if you share the whole message of John 14:6 which Jesus said.

They will also complain and push back against the commands which they don't want to obey. The world doesn't love Jesus.

But those who are seeking truth and love Jesus will obey His commands and will gain understanding of God's great love for them because the Holy Spirit will indwell them and give them that understanding.

So then the only question we need to ask is do we truly love Jesus or are we a part of the world, refusing to hear His Word that requires us to admit our sin, repent of our sin, and submit our lives to Jesus, our Savior and Lord?

To those who don't want to hear the truth, it's like a bomb that they are trying to run away and hide from.

But to those who are seeking truth and love Jesus, it's a message of amazing grace and love that forever changes our life and guarantees our eternity.
