Jawbone of a Donkey (Judges 15)

Have you ever noticed that sometimes the man God chooses to lead His people is not someone you particularly like, expect, or would prefer to be your leader?

For example, Samson, was a big, brash, powerful man who was attracted to beautiful women.

He said he believed in God but appeared to believe more in his own strength.

He had a terrible temper. He would not only take revenge but make sure he completely destroyed his adversaries.

He was extremely prideful. When God gave him victory, he would take all the credit himself and boast about his own strength.

Judges 15:16 Then Samson said, “With the jawbone of a donkey, heaps upon heaps, with the jawbone of a donkey I have killed a thousand men.”

But in spite of the fact that I don’t like Samson, his arrogance, his temper, his ungodly behavior, he is clearly someone God selected and put in position to lead His people and accomplish God’s purpose.

Samson was the 12th judge God placed over Israel and he ruled over Israel for 20 years.

In fact the Angel of the Lord, Himself, told Samson’s parents that God was bringing them a son, who would be a Nazarite from birth, never drinking the fruit of the vine, and who would begin to deliver God’s people.

This is a reminder to me to try to look past whether or not I like a leader’s personality and attitude and instead see if what they are doing is in line with God’s Word.

Because sometimes God chooses to use the jawbone of a donkey to rescue His people. And sometimes He chooses to use the jawbone of a donkey to bring destruction.
