Spiritual Warfare (Ephesians 6)

Did you know that sometimes when you find yourself fighting an uphill battle and the world just keeps pitching a bucket of mud in your face, it could actually be spiritual warfare trying to stop you from making progress and take your eyes off of Jesus.

The Apostle Paul warns us about spiritual warfare which is probably something that most people don't really understand. We probably have a tendency to think we only exist physically. But we exist physically, emotionally, and spiritually. And it is in the spiritual realm where we are often attacked and blindsided.

There are spiritual forces, Satan and other fallen angels, who want to knock us down and make us unable to function. More than anything, they want to turn us away from God by either making us mad at God or trying to convince us that He does not exist.

Could it be that Satan's most effective deception in the world today is convincing people that he does not exist and that God does not exist?

So how do we protect ourselves against spiritual warfare? The Apostle Paul said it like this:

Ephesians 6:11-17 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand firm therefore:

  • having girded your loins with truth

  • having put on the breastplate of righteousness

  • having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

  • taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one

  • take the helmet of salvation

  • take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God

So when we find ourselves doubting God, it's time to learn to protect ourselves against spiritual warfare.

When we find ourselves struggling with anger, fighting physical and mental afflictions, and drifting away from God, it's time to learn to protect ourselves against spiritual warfare.

We protect ourselves by leaning into God with every fiber of our being every single day! We stop in our tracks, pray, worship, and get into God's Word.

When Satan tempted Jesus, Jesus fought back with God's Word and Satan left.

So if Satan finds that his attacks make us lean into God so hard that our faith grows stronger, he will leave us as well.

However, Scripture also says even with Jesus, "Satan left him until an opportune time." (Luke 4:13)

That means we can never let our guard down. We have to continue to put on our armor every day, leaning into God first thing in the morning and then keeping that armor on all day, every day.

The other thing we need to do is ask God to protect us from Satan's attacks:

Matthew 6:13 Do not lead us into temptation but deliver us from evil.

None of us are strong enough to fight spiritual warfare on our own. But God's armor is enough to protect us if we will just take the time to strap it on at the beginning of every day.

Dear Lord, How ironic that I got distracted with other things today and didn't find time to write this devotion until now. I even considered not writing it at all and continuing to work on my other tasks. Thank you for stopping me and reminding me that I was going through the day without your armor on. Thank you for reminding me to put on your armor before I start my day and make sure I keep it on through out the day. Lord, please protect me from the enemy's attacks and keep me from temptation. Lord, please strength me for battle each day so that I can be an effective witness shining your Light and sharing your love. In Jesus' name I pray, amen.
