Russia, Ukraine, and the Gog Magog War

Updated: Feb 25, 2022

In Prophecy News:

What does Russia invading Ukraine have to do with the Gog Magog War?

Well first we have to understand what the Gog Magog War is. Ezekiel 38-39 describes a future war in which specific nations known today as Russia, Iran, Turkey, Sudan, and Libya will come down from the north to attack Israel, seize plunder, and carry away great riches.

But before Russia (Rosh) leads this coalition against Israel, they will want to make sure no one will come to Israel’s defense. With Ukraine, Russia is learning several countries threatened action. But no one is coming to Ukraine’s defense.

Meanwhile on the world stage, China and Iran are also taking note that no one came to Ukraine’s defense.

This is a green light for other bullies to go after whatever they want. So we need to watch China with Taiwan as well as Iran‘s threats against Israel and their terrorist proxies all over the world becoming more aggressive with attacks particularly with UAVs.

Israel will also start making more aggressive moves to defend itself against Iran’s build up of military weapons around them, particularly in Syria. Watch for the Isaiah 17 prophecy about Damascus. If that is where Iran is storing their weapons to attack Israel, Israel will attack Damascus. This Isaiah 17 attack may trigger the Psalm 83 War and/or the Gog Magog War.

In regard to the Gog Magog War, the leader of this coalition of nations will be known as, or have the title, “Gog” from the land of Magog. Magog, today would be the “__stan” nations which used to be a part of the Soviet Union.

But as we move closer to the end of the church age, we are clearly seeing the players of this future war moving into position. Russia taking Ukraine puts them closer to Israel and seems to reveal Putin’s intention of expanding Russia’s territory.

But does that mean that the Gog Magog War is about to begin? No, not necessarily.

When we examine the prophecies about the Gog Magog War in Ezekiel 38-39, it’s unclear when this future war will take place on the Biblical timeline.

However, God gave us information about this war and told us our attitude towards End Times prophecy should always be to stay alert and be ready. So, it seems pretty important for us to take the time to study and understand it.

Here’s a breakdown of the periods of the Biblical timeline starting with our current age:

Here are some of the Gog Magog War prophecies to be aware of and how they correlate to the Biblical timeline periods:

At the time of this war, the Jews will be living securely in their land. (Ezek. 38:8)

I question whether this can happen today in the church age with Iran on a mission to wipe Israel off the face of the earth. But in the grand scheme of things with the Iron Dome missile defense system, IDF (Israel Defense Force), Mossad, and incredible technological advancements, Israel is living more securely today than in the last 70+ years.

This victory will fulfill several prophecies God spoke to Israel. (Ezek. 38:17)

There are no specific prophecies of a war during the church age or even during the Tribulation that would seem to match this war. But if this war is one of the battles at the end of the Tribulation, that would certainly match several prophesies spoken to Israel.

On the day Gog comes against Israel, there will be a great earthquake. (Ezek. 38:19)

Earthquakes are increasing in frequency and intensity. During the 7-year Tribulation there will be even greater earthquakes. But the "big one" seems to be at the end of the Tribulation, when Jesus returns.

God will supernaturally destroy this coalition that attacks Israel with pestilence, bloodshed, flood, hailstones, fire and brimstone. (Ezek. 38:22)

This sounds a lot like the judgments God will reign down on earth during the 7-year Tribulation.

Israel will make fires with the weapons for 7 years rather than gathering firewood. (Ezek. 39:09-10)

This narrows the possible timeframe of this war. If this war takes place during the church age, it would have to happen 3.5 years before the Tribulation begins. At the midpoint of the 7-year Tribulation, the Jews will be hiding away from the Antichrist, not burning weapons. So this can't happen during the second half of the Tribulation. But this could happen at the end of the Tribulation, when Jesus returns and defeats the Antichrist.

For 7 months Israel will bury the Gog coalition to cleanse the land. (Ezek. 39:12,14)

Israel will not be burying the bodies to cleanse the land during the second half of the Tribulation. But this could happen during the church age or during the first half of the Tribulation or at the end of the Tribulation.

These last 3 prophesies have to be examined together:

  • After the defeat, Israel will know the Lord their God from that day onward. (Ezek. 39:22)

  • They will forget their disgrace when they live securely on their own land with no one to make them afraid. (Ezek. 39:26)

  • I will not hide My face from them any longer, for I will have poured out My Spirit on the house of Israel. (Ezek. 39:29)

These three prophecies can only be fulfilled at the end of the Tribulation when Jesus returns and defeats the Antichrist and his armies. That means if there is no time gap between when this war happens and when these 3 prophecies are fulfilled, the Gog Magog War has to happen at the end of the Tribulation. (Zech. 12:9-10)

But Scripture does not tell us when on the Biblical timeline the Gog Magog War will take place. Yet God gives us very specific prophecies which will be fulfilled at that time. These prophecies assure us:

1) God is not done with Israel. Israel is God’s chosen people and He has a magnificent plan for their redemption and a great hope for their future.

2) God is not done with those of us who have chosen to follow Jesus. In spite of what we see happening in our world today, God is in control. He loves us and has a purpose and plan for each of our lives.

So, as we study Scripture and stay alert, maybe the real question we should be asking is, given all that we see happening in our world, what is God calling us to do today to live out His purpose and bring Him glory?

Is there someone close to you and far from God you need to pray for and share Jesus’ message of love and salvation with?

Let's all pray for the people of Ukraine.

“When these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” Luke 21:28
