Removing Idols From Among Us (2 Kings 10)

When I read about idolatry in the Old Testament, the worship of Baal, Asherah, and golden calves, which seems to be a repeated theme in every book I have read this year, I find it easy to skip over that subject, thinking “that doesn’t really apply to my life today.”

I don’t know of any Baal or Asherah worshipers or people with golden calves in their living rooms.

But just because we don’t hear those names being used doesn’t mean idolatry isn't alive and well among us. If anything, it is more rampant now than ever.

There is the Satanic temple, witchcraft, mediums, divination, and who knows what else.

From the beginning God told his people, to stay away from anyone involved in the worship of anything other than Him.

But Israel kept falling on their face on this and intermarrying with idol worshipers.

Finally God had enough and sent Jehu to destroy all the idol worshipers and their temples.

But there was one idol Jehu overlooked which prevented him from being a great king in the eyes of the Lord.

2 Kings 10:28-29 So Jehu destroyed Baal worship in Israel. However, he did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam .. the worship of the golden calves at Bethel.

Could it be we are inclined to do the same thing as Jehu today?

There are idols around us that are obvious, which we immediately remove from our lives. But others, we let remain and continue to have influence over our lives like Jehu and the golden calf.

What’s your golden calf? What’s the idol you’re letting remain in your life, to have influence over you and your family, which continuously tempts you to take your eyes off of Jesus?

Every example in Scripture tells us to stay away from those who are worshiping idols and to destroy the altars of Baal, Asherah, and even the golden calves which may appear harmless.

The reason God is so insistent on this throughout Scripture is because regardless of the name or form these idols take, Satan and his demons are behind them. We don't ever want to be yoked with demonic influences in any form.

So I guess we each have a choice to make. We can either try to straddle the fence and worship God and idols or we can obey God and get rid of the idols and worship Him alone.

Dear Lord, Please reveal to me the golden calves I am allowing to have influence over my life which are preventing me from being totally devoted to You. In Jesus' name. Amen.
