Relationships affect Faith (Judges 3)

Who we choose to spend time with and join ourselves to, greatly influences our faith.

The Israelites were attracted to the people surrounding them. So they disobeyed God and intermarried with them.

They were also attracted to the Canaanite religion’s sexual permissiveness. They could do almost anything they wished and still be obeying a Canaanite god.

For example prostitution was encouraged as a form of worship, not to mention child sacrifice. It was a Satanic religion that glorified selfishness (do whatever pleases me) rather than living for God.

Judges 3:7 The sons of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and forgot the Lord their God and served the Baals and the Asheroth.

But the Israelites didn’t start out with a desire to be idolaters.

They listened to the voices around them saying “there’s really nothing wrong with this” and little by little added the Canaanite pagan practices to their own worship practices. Soon they found themselves absorbed in pagan worship.

I am just as susceptible to this temptation today. How am I to show love and kindness to those with different belief systems without adopting practices which disobey God?

First, I will choose not to participate in activities which may encourage me to violate my commitment to God.

Second, I won’t join myself to those who may encourage me to violate my commitment to God.

Third, I will show love and kindness to all people regardless of their belief system without agreeing to follow their gods and their belief systems. I can be polite and respectful while agreeing to disagree.
