Power of the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 1)

One of the things that has most amazed me about the Spirit of God in my life is how He has changed my wants, passions, and gifts. Things that I would have never seen myself doing in a million years, I now do daily. Do you have the Holy Spirit abiding in you?

In Paul's second letter to Timothy, he encouraged him to rely on the Holy Spirit within him, Who would guide him and give him strength:

2 Timothy 1:7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

How do we know we have received the Holy Spirit? If you have repented of your sins and submitted yourself to Jesus as the Lord of your life, He has sent you the Holy Spirit to indwell you as your guide and as a guarantee of your salvation:

Ephesians 1:13-14 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

Some will say the Holy Spirit does not indwell us until hands are laid on us. But for that to be true, that would have to be the consistent example throughout Scripture. It is not:

Acts 10:44-45 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.

Others will say if you don't speak in tongues, you don't have the Holy Spirit within you. Again that's not what Scripture says:

1 Corinthians 12:27-30 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? But earnestly desire the best gifts.

So then how can we know we have been given the Holy Spirit?

1) When the Holy Spirit comes within us we will have a desire to know God through His Word. We will thirst to get into His Word and know Him more. The Holy Spirit will give us understanding of His Word and how to apply it to our lives:

John 14:15-17, 26 15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

2) When we have been given the Holy Spirit, we will receive spiritual gifts to use to build up the body of Christ and glorify Jesus. Do you know what your spiritual gifts are?

There is a survey by Lifeway Ministries that is the best I have seen at helping us discover our spiritual gifts and how God is calling us to serve Him in our local church body and beyond. The link below has PDF files (Spiritual Gifts Survey and Spiritual Gifts List) that look at spiritual gifts from Scripture and give you an idea of how God has gifted you. Once you understand your gifts, you have a better idea of how to serve God with them.

My gifts according to this survey are teaching, evangelism, and prophecy. Ironically, I work for a ministry that teaches Bible Studies with a focus on examining Current Events through the lens of End-Times Bible Prophecy and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ through the study of His Word. What I do in association with Living Word Ministries is a perfect match for the spiritual gifts God has given me. Funny how that works, isn't it.

But what about you? What are your spiritual gifts? How are you using them for the kingdom of God?
