Mystery Babylon (Rev 17 & 18)

I wonder if chapter 17 and 18 are the hardest chapters of Revelation to understand. They are filled with symbolism about "mystery Babylon" which is difficult to interpret. Yet in the midst of this symbolism, there is tremendous application for our time today.

Mystery Babylon is symbolic of the global Religious, Economic, and Social governance system that will be in place under the Antichrist during the 7-year Tribulation.

In fact, we see a concerted effort to birth this new global system in our world today.

So, it could be this system will even be in place before the Tribulation, before the Antichrist rises to power, according to Daniel 7:8.

But if God's Word calls this globalist system "Mystery Babylon," we want to know what Scripture tells us about "Babylon."

  • Scripture actually mentions Babylon 287 times! It's a major topic.

  • Genesis 11 tells us that Babylon was the civilization that was hostile against God after the flood. It was the first attempt to establish a one world government.

  • 2 Kings 20, 24-25 tell us Babylon was the capitol of the empire that cruelly conquered Judah. It was the essence of evil.

  • The religious system of Babylon was Satanic. It was founded by the wife of Nimrod and consisted of idol worship mixed with child sacrifice and sexual immorality.

So, if this future globalist system of the Antichrist is associated with "Babylon," what birth pangs would you expect to see as we get closer to that time?

  • Maybe an increase in human sacrifice (abortion, euthanasia).

  • Maybe an increase in sexual immorality of all kinds.

  • Maybe an increase in idolatry which God refers to as adultery throughout the Old Testament.

Under the Antichrist, "Babylon" will be a global system controlling the entire world.

Revelation 17 also tells us about the characteristics of this future global system:

  • "The great harlot who sits on many waters" (Rev 17:1), is not a complimentary character trait.

  • This "harlot" will lure people to believe what it promotes is true and right and it is described as immorality in God's eyes.

  • The personification of this global system "holds a cup full of abominations and of the unclean things of her immorality" (Rev 17:4). I would expect this to mean as we get closer to this time, what God's Word says are abominations and unclean, will be widely celebrated.

  • "The woman will be drunk with the blood of the saints and the witness of Jesus" (Rev 17:6). There will be a global persecution of God's chosen people and of the followers of Jesus. We already see a birth pang of that in our time as persecution of the Jews is rising exponentially.

But here's the good news, Revelation 17 & 18 tell us that God will destroy this future global system. It will be totally eliminated and replaced by the reign of Jesus on this earth for 1,000 years.

However, only those who have repented and trusted in Jesus as the Lord of their lives will see His millennial reign on this earth.

So the warning in Revelation 18:4-5 to the Tribulation saints, to come out of Babylon, also applies to us today. We see the foundation being laid for this coming Global Religious, Economic, Social Governance system. So, we need to heed God's warning to the Tribulation Saints:

Revelation 18:4-5 I heard another voice from heaven, saying, "Come out of her, my people, so that you will not participate in her sins and receive of her plagues; [06] for her sins have piled up as high as heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities.

To "come out of Babylon," we need to make sure that we compare all teachings and all news to God's Word and only align ourselves with that which is consistent with His commands. To do that, we have to be in God's Word every day. There is really no such thing as not having time for it. It is the sword of the Spirit and the very essence of the armor God provides us for protection.

Dear Lord, Thank you for the warning about this future global system that is coming. With each new day we can clearly see the global foundation being laid. But I trust your plan, Lord, and rejoice in knowing this evil regime of the future that will be worse than anything this world has ever seen, will have a very limited lifespan before You come to reign forever and ever. In Jesus' name I pray, amen.
