My Wisdom or God's Wisdom (1 Samuel 31)

When you find yourself in a crisis is your knee jerk reaction to cry out to God or rely on your own wisdom?

Saul faced death in the same way that he faced all decisions throughout his life; by relying on his own wisdom.

1 Samuel 31:4 Saul groaned to his armor bearer, “Take your sword and kill me before these pagan Philistines come to run me through and taunt and torture me.”

Over and over through the account of Saul’s life we see him taking matters into his own hands. Then even in the heat of the battle, he doesn’t cry out to God or seek God’s guidance but relies on his own wisdom.

This is the reason God ripped the kingdom out of Saul’s hands. He always did what he thought was right rather than trusting God, seeking His guidance, and obeying Him.

Oh Lord, please help me follow the examples of Samuel and David rather than Saul. Lord, please help me consistently seek Your direction and Your guidance in all things rather than relying on my own wisdom and doing what is right in my own eyes.
