Judgments turn to Woes (Revelation 9)

Now with the 5th and 6th of 7 trumpet judgments, the degree of wrath is clearly turned up, as these last 3 trumpets are described as "woes" or warnings. What makes these judgments more severe than the previous ones of the first half of the 7-year Tribulation?

The 7 seal judgments and first 4 trumpet judgments were all being cast down from heaven and mainly affected the earth.

But notice where these judgments come from and what they target.

Revelation 9:2-6 [02] He opened the bottomless pit, and smoke went up out of the pit, like the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the pit. [03] Then out of the smoke came locusts upon the earth, and power was given them, as the scorpions of the earth have power. [04] They were told not to hurt the grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. [05] And they were not permitted to kill anyone, but to torment for 5 months; and their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it stings a man. [06] And in those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, and death flees from them.

So with the 5th Trumpet Judgment, these demon locust come up out of the bottomless pit, sting, and torment the men who do not have the seal of God for 5 months.

Then comes the 6th Trumpet Judgment:

Revelation 9:13-15 [13] Then the 6th angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, [14] one saying to the 6th angel who had the trumpet, "Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates." [15] And the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released, so that they would kill a 1/3 of mankind.

With the 6th Trumpet Judgment, 4 angels, who are bound, are released to kill 1/3 of mankind.

It's ironic to me that many people view the first half of the 7-year Tribulation as the part that is not really God's wrath. Of course, a quick study of Revelation 6:16-17 shows that even the seal judgments are described as "the wrath of the Lamb and the wrath of the One who sits on the throne."

But the other clear reason that the entire 7-year Tribulation is the wrath of God is because of Revelation 9:15, 1/3 of mankind is killed. This comes after the 4th Seal Judgment in Revelation 6:7-8 where 1/4 of mankind is killed.

So let's do some quick math. The earth's current population is 8 billion.

  • After the 4th seal (Rev. 6:7-8), 1/4 are killed, which takes it down to 6 billion.

  • After the 6th trumpet (Rev. 9:15), 1/3 are killed, which takes it down to 4 billon.

So by the 6th trumpet judgment (which is still the first half of the Tribulation), the earth's population has been cut in half due to the judgments the Lamb is reigning down on the earth.

Does that sound like God's wrath to you? It sure sounds like God's wrath to me.

But here's the good news. Guess what else God's Word says about the wrath of God:

1 Thessalonians 5:9-10 For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:9 Having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.

Romans 8:1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Do you have the assurance of knowing that you are not destined for the wrath of God and of the Lamb?

If you have repented of your sin and asked Jesus to be your Lord, ruling on the throne of your life, you are His bride, who He paid the debt of sins for. After Jesus paid that debt on the cross, He said, "it is finished," meaning the debt was paid in full.

This means you will not see the Tribulation, God's wrath, on those who refuse to repent and trust in Jesus.

But the question is who else around you is far from God and needs to hear His message of love and salvation while there is still time? Will you share that message with someone today?

Dear Lord, I don't know how anyone could look at the daily events in our world without seeing how close we are getting to the very end of the church age and the beginning of the Tribulation. The framework for the One World Government is being laid all around us. But yet Your Word says, "when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." Lord, I don't know when You are going to come, but I am ready. In the meantime, I will continue to share Your message of love and salvation with each day that You give me breath. Maranatha.
