Jesus is our High Priest (1 Chronicles 6, Hebrews 3)

Do you have a favorite pastor, priest, Sunday School teacher, youth leader, Bible study teacher you trust with all your spiritual questions and for advice? Do you totally trust their counsel or do you also test it against God's Word before following it?

1 Chronicles 6 gives the genealogy of the Levites and the descendants of Aaron.

1 Chronicles 6:1-3 The sons of Levi were Gershon, Kohath and Merari. The sons of Kohath were Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel. The children of Amram were Aaron, Moses and Miriam.

The tribe of Levi was set apart to serve God in the tabernacle, later in the temple, as well as teach the people God's Word and encourage them to obey it.

Aaron, one of Levi's descendants was also chosen to be the first high priest. In fact, God required all priests after him to to be descendants of Aaron.

I find that ironic when I think about Aaron's track record as a high priest. Remember the whole golden calf fiasco in Exodus 32?

So the application for me here is whether we are talking about a priest, Levite, pastor, theologian, Bible teacher, or spiritual mentor, none of them are perfect because they are all human beings just like me. Absolutely every one of them (and us) have sinned, fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), and will continue to sin throughout this life.

So, we have to test all teaching whether it's from the Pope, Billy Graham, or anyone else against the one source that is perfect, the 37 books of the Old Testament and the 29 books of the New Testament.

Only the 66 books of the Bible is the infallible Word of God.

2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness.

Only Jesus, who is fully God and fully man, can be considered the High Priest of our confession.

Hebrews 3:1 consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession.

John 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him.

I find it really easy to trust certain pastors and teachers I look up to. But I must remember while I admire their study and dedication to God and am thankful for their guidance and teaching in my life, I must still test all teaching against God's Word before relying on it and living it out. I was taught this by my "mother" in the faith and I hope I have continued to teach others around me to do the same .. test all teaching for yourself, against God's Word.
