Jesus in the Old Testament (Gen 17)

Updated: Feb 14, 2022

Several places in the Old Testament (OT), people appear to see God, face to face. But how is that possible?

Adam and Eve in Genesis 3, Abram sees Melchizedek in Genesis 4, Hagar sees the Angel of the LORD in Genesis 16.

Yet the undeniable occurrence of people seeing God face to face in the OT is in Genesis 17:1, "Now when Abram was 99 years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, 'I am God Almighty.'"

But how could Abram see God when Exodus 33:20 says "no one can see God's face and live?"

Well, Jesus gave us the answer in John 14:9, "Anyone who has seen me has been the Father."

Also John 1:1 tells us that Jesus, is God and that He h as always existed.

So it was Jesus appearing in human flesh in OT times and recognized as God Almighty.

This is called a Theophany and it gets me excited about the OT. It also helps me better understand what it means in Genesis 1:26 to be created in the image of God, in the image of Jesus.

Lord Jesus, please let me reflect Your image today!
