God calls the Unqualified (1 Samuel 16)

Have you ever noticed that God calls unlikely and unqualified people to serve Him in unexpected ways?

For example, some of the pastors who God has used to have the biggest impact on my life are introverts who don’t even like to be around people.

We expect people who are serving God in certain roles to look a certain way and have certain skills and personalities.

Yet God often chooses the nobodies to serve Him in unexpected ways.

We see this in 1 Samuel 16. Samuel expected the next king God selected to replace Saul to be a man of great stature. So when God guided Samuel to Jesse’s sons, Samuel assumed the tall, poised, good looking son would be the one God had chosen. But out of the 8 sons of Jesse, God chose the youngest son, the least of them all, an insignificant shepherd boy to be the next king of Israel.

1 Samuel 16:6-7 When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, “Surely this is the Lord’s anointed!” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

This passage really resonates with me because I know I’m one of those unlikely servants God has chosen, an absolute nobody. I am a short, soft-spoken, woman who did not grow up in church. I could never be qualified to preach. You don’t want to hear me sing. I’m an introvert who gets nervous at the thought of talking in front of people.

So why would God call someone like me?

Because when He uses the insignificant, the unqualified, the unlikely nobodies like me, it is clearly God who gets all the credit and all the glory.

God doesn’t call the qualified. He qualifies the called.

Is God calling you to serve Him in a way that you may not feel qualified to do? When He repeatedly puts it on your heart over and over again, making you think about it constantly, even when you don’t want to, just say, “Ok Lord! I will serve You however You call me to serve.”
