Does God Hear Our Prayers? (2 Chronicles 7)

Have you ever felt like your prayers just hit the ceiling? Have you ever wondered if God really hears your prayers? If you knew for sure that God does hear your prayers, how would that change not only your prayers but also how often you pray?

When Solomon dedicated the temple of the Lord, he knelt down on his knees before the Lord and before all the assembly of Israel and prayed for God to hear the prayers of His people when they sinned.

But time went by and Solomon finished several other building projects.

Then finally one night, the LORD appeared to Solomon and said, "I have heard your prayer.."

2 Chronicles 7:14 If My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

To be honest this is a verse I know well. But as I studied the context of this chapter this morning, I gained a lot more understanding.

First, God heard Solomon's prayer just as He hears our prayers. But He answers in His time, not in our time.

Second, God told Solomon He would forgive His people when they sinned IF:

  • They would humble themselves (Admit their sin)

  • Pray to God (Ask for forgiveness)

  • Seek God continually

  • Turn away from their sinful behavior, rather than confessing it and keep doing it

In our world today we are quick to say I'm sorry or "my bad" but then go right on doing the same thing over again. But true repentance is more than a quick acknowledgement; it's a changed behavior.

So we can think of this both individually and corporately as a nation that if we will truly admit our sins, ask God for forgiveness, seek Him throughout each day, and turn away from our sinful behavior, God will hear us, forgive us, and heal our land.

It's easy then to think there's no way our nation is going to repent and ask God for forgiveness. But we also have to realize the example we have here is one person willingly getting down on their knees before God and before others and asking God to forgive them and heal their land.

Are you willing to join me in kneeling before God and praying for our nation to admit our sins, ask God for forgiveness, seek Him continually, and turn away from our wicked ways?

Dear Lord, When I think of the sins of our nation, my heart is physically heavy and overwhelmed knowing that our nation has polluted the land You have blessed us with by sacrificing innocent blood. We have ignored Your Word and worshiped the God of convenience and choice. We have ignored your very clear definition of life; that where there is blood, there is life. We have shed so much innocent blood, daily. Oh Lord I pray that we would recognize our sins, repent, and seek your forgiveness even this day. Lord, I pray that those who do not know Your Word would understand it this day, fight to save the lives of the innocent, and prevent the shedding of anymore innocent blood. Lord, thank you for hearing my prayer. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
