Delight in the Lord (Psalm 40)

Updated: Feb 17, 2022

Those who know me know I love Bible prophecy. When I’m reading along in the Old Testament and come across a passage that is clearly speaking of Jesus, I get really excited!!!

This morning in my reading I noticed Psalm 40:6-8 is Jesus, talking about Himself, through David, 1,000 years before Jesus took on human flesh. Wow!!! Think about that.

How do we know for sure? Because we have progressive revelation in Hebrews 10:5-10 which tells us that Psalm 40:6-8 is speaking of Jesus. Or just read Psalm 40:6-8 and you will clearly see it.

So then what did Jesus say in this Psalm, that I need to pay attention to?

Psalm 40:8 “I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”

This seems to me to be one of the litmus tests Scripture gives us to identify if we are just saying “I’m a Christian” or if we really mean “I am a Christian.”

There’s no such thing as a “non-practicing Christian” which is a phrase I heard often as a kid.

The bottom line is if “I am a Christian,” a follower of Christ, I will delight in doing God’s will rather than insisting on my own.

In Psalm 40:6-8, Jesus is telling us God the Father didn’t desire sacrifice and offerings. That was just a means to help the Jews realize the cost of their sin and their need for a savior.

So when Jesus said He delighted in doing the will of God, He’s talking about sacrificing His own life for those who really mean, “I am a Christian” and delight in doing God’s will rather than their own.
