Deer Pants for Water (Psalm 42)

Updated: Feb 17, 2022

A few years ago Chip and I went to Colorado looking for lake scenes with mountains in the background to photograph. We went to this beautiful place in Aspen called Maroon Bells but there had been a drought and the lake was dried up.

We decided to hike up to the lake above that one but didn’t take water with us and didn’t realize it wasn’t a quick hike. I have never been so thirsty in my entire life.

So now as I read this verse, I am reminded of that hike when every part of me desperately panted for a drop of water.

Psalm 42:1 As the deer pants for the water, So my soul pants for You, O God.

We know when we are hungry and need food. We know when we are dehydrated and need water.

But do we recognize when we are spiritually dehydrated and spiritually starving and our thirst can only be quenched by God’s living water?

Does our soul pant for living water that we desperately need to sustain us emotionally, physically and spiritually or have we lived spiritually dehydrated for so long, that we don’t recognize that God’s Spirit within us is what’s missing in our life?

The void that many are trying to fill today, can only be quenched from the fountain of living water that only God can provide.

Dear Lord, Just as the deer pants for the water, I pray my soul pants for you every morning of every day. Lord, please don’t ever let me fall away and get spiritually dehydrated again. Help me recognize that the thirst within me can’t be quenched by anything this world dangles in front of me. Only You, Lord, can quench my thirst with your living water, your Spirit within me, making me aware of your presence and guiding me through each day. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
