Dealing with Evil (1 Samuel 18)

Have you ever been somewhere or dealt with someone in which you sensed the presence of evil?

In my reading today, King Saul, is influenced by an evil spirit to try to kill David. Saul can see that David has the Spirit of the Lord within him and becomes jealous of David.

1 Samuel 18:10-12 10 Now it came about on the next day that an evil spirit .. came mightily upon Saul .. 11 Saul hurled the spear for he thought, “I will pin David to the wall.” .. 12 Now Saul was afraid of David, for the Lord was with him ..

As time goes on and the Spirit of the Lord continues to give David success, Saul becomes obsessed with killing David even though David has been nothing but kind, respectful, and loyal to Saul.

Although this is not something I want to think about, the reality is, nothing has changed to prevent evil spirits (demons) from still being active in our world today. We see news reports that tell of the evil all around us but we probably don't stop to think about what the source of that evil could be.

So there are definitely some points of application for me here:

1) The Spirit of God who resides in all who have repented and trusted in Jesus as their Lord, will not allow a demon to possess us.

1 John 4:4 Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.

2) I need to spend more time asking God to protect me, my family, and my friends from demons rather than just avoiding thinking about this.

Matthew 6:13 Do not lead us into temptation, but deliver is from the evil one.

3) When I have to deal with people who appear to be influenced by an evil spirit, I need to immediately stop and ask God to deliver them from the power of the evil one. I also need to ask God to protect me and my family from that evil influence which will try to bring harm, division, and destruction.

Matthew 5:44 Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

Lord, this is pretty scary stuff and not something I want to think about. But I know it’s real. I also know sometimes we may have to deal with people who are under the influence of an evil spirit. Lord, in those cases, please give me the wisdom to run rather than provoke, speak only what you tell me to speak, cry out to you for protection, and beg you for their deliverance.

Lord, thank you for the assurance that Your Spirit is within me and that You are stronger than anything I will ever encounter in this world. Lord, even in situations like this please strengthen me so that my words and my actions shine Your Light and bring You glory. In Jesus' name, Amen.
