Danger of Social Protocols (Judges 21)

Have you ever been reading through the Bible and gotten to a passage that just made you think “why is this even in here!!!” Yeah that’s where I’m at in my reading today.

I knew in the book of Judges, there was a story at the end (Judges 19-21), that I hoped I could just skip over and find something else to write a devotion on. But no! My reading for today is just those 3 yucky chapters about that one horrible story.

In a nutshell, a Levite is traveling with his concubine and they lodge with a man. Evil men come to the house wanting to rape the Levite. The man of the house and the Levite send out the man’s daughter and the Levite’s concubine to be raped while the men stay safely inside. And the story just continues to get worse from there.

If you’re like me and you read a passage like this, you just get angry and want to stop reading any further. In fact, I'm sure that's what I did the first time I read through the Bible and got to these chapters. But now when I see something like this, I ask, "Lord, why is this horrible story in here? What am I supposed to get out of this?"

And the answer to that is in the last verse of the last chapter:

Judges 21:25 “In those days .. everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”

God is showing us what can happen when social protocols carry more authority than God’s moral compass. And when that is the case, it’s really scary to see just how evil the world can be.

So this is a reminder to me that I need to always check myself to make sure I am yielding to what God says is right and wrong rather than trying to do what is right in my own eyes.

Dear Lord, It's really easy for me to see how evil the people were in this story. But in my own life when I'm faced with decisions, what's right in my own eyes makes a lot more sense until I get further down the road and have to face the consequences. Lord, let this story remind me to always yield to You and do what is right in Your eyes rather than insist on doing what is right in my own eyes.

In these days .. we also see people doing what is right in their own eyes.”
