Blindside Betrayal (Psalm 55)

I wonder if maybe one of the hardest things to go through is the betrayal of someone who claims to be a Christian, someone you have spent time with in church, someone you thought was safe to trust.

Oh what delight Satan must take in this type of betrayal that often leads not only to the destruction of relationships but also the destruction of faith in Christ.

But as I read Psalm 55, I pictured Jesus and His betrayal not only by Judas but by all of the disciples. They all left Him. They all vowed to walk by His side even till death. But they all betrayed and left Him.

Jesus knows how we feel when we are betrayed. He is the One we can count on to never betray us and to always walk beside us, helping us pick up the pieces of our broken heart.

Psalm 55:12-14,16-21 NLT It is not an enemy who taunts me— I could bear that. It is not my foes who so arrogantly insult me— I could have hidden from them. Instead, it is you—my equal, my companion and close friend. What good fellowship we once enjoyed as we walked together to the house of God.

But I will call on God, and the Lord will rescue me. Morning, noon, and night I cry out in my distress, and the Lord hears my voice. He ransoms me and keeps me safe from the battle waged against me, though many still oppose me. God, who has ruled forever, will hear me and humble them.

For my enemies refuse to change their ways; they do not fear God. As for my companion, he betrayed his friends; he broke his promises. His words are as smooth as butter, but in his heart is war. His words are as soothing as lotion, but underneath are daggers!

Dear Lord, Please help us when we are blindsided by betrayal. Help us run to You rather than turn away. You are the One we can trust to never betray us. You wait for us with arms wide open, ready to embrace us and give us rest. You understand our pain. You even understand our feelings of loneliness. But we are never alone. You are always there. Your love for us will never end and is the only thing which will truly heal the broken pieces of our heart when we are blindsided by betrayal. But even in these times Lord, as the Psalmist said as he ended in Psalm 55:23, "I will trust in You."
