AWANA (2 Timothy 2)

AWANA is an acronym which sums up 2 Timothy 2:15. it's the name of a children's program that teaches kids to memorize and live out Scripture. But the question I need to ask myself is am I memorizing and living out Scripture?

In 2 Timothy 2, Paul teaches Timothy about the importance of our words and our actions with all people in all situations, being above reproach and something that honors our Savior rather than brings Him shame. In other words, if we claim to be a follower of Jesus Christ, do people see behavior, actions, and words in us that lift up Jesus rather than put Him down?

2 Timothy 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.

But the interesting thing is, as soon as you start dedicating your life to living for Jesus, there will be people who want to start ignorant arguments with you. They will literally want to debate and twist Scripture to try to prove you wrong.

When this happens, recognize it for what it is, the same tactic Satan tried to use with Jesus, quoting bits and pieces of Scripture twisting it to try to get Jesus to worship him.

Paul warns Timothy to recognize when people are trying to draw us into these ignorant arguments about Scripture rather than really seeking to draw close to Christ.

2 Timothy 2:23-26 Again I say, don’t get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people. Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth. Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants.

So as soon as someone tries to debate and argue Scripture with you, get up and walk away. We are not to debate and argue Scripture. But when people genuinely are seeking to understand, be patient with them, and help them draw close to God through Scripture.

To be most effective and ready to help others, we need to be studying and memorizing Scripture ourselves.

If you have kids or grandkids that you want to see learn Scripture well, look for an AWANA program near you and get them enrolled. It's one night per week and they earn badges to go on their vests by successfully memorizing sets of Scripture.

I will always be thankful for the AWANA program at a little church close to our house when we lived in Glen Carbon, Illinois. Through that program, one of our kids accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior as she memorized and recited Scripture.

Dear Lord, Satan is working overtime to indoctrinate us into thinking words and actions which are unholy are absolutely fine. He must be celebrating at how quickly and easily adults and kids are being blinded from the truth. Lord, I pray that we would wake up and recognize this deception, flee from all that is unholy, and turn to You with our whole mind, body, and spirit, committing our life to You. In Jesus' name I pray, amen.
