Answering the Call (Exo 35)

Updated: Feb 14, 2022

Have you ever known God was calling you to do something but you just didn't have the time or you just didn't want to do it?

In Exodus 35-36 Israel was called to build the tabernacle of the Lord, a work that could only be accomplished by a total community effort. Six times in these two chapters the phrase everyone “whose heart stirred him…” describes the response of the people to the work that needed to be done.

God gave the people the skills, knowledge, and resources to do the work. But they each had to answer the call as God stirred their heart and then do their part for all the intricate details of the tabernacle to be completed.

The result in Exodus 36:5-7 was that Moses had to tell them to stop because more than enough material had been provided to complete the tabernacle.

Today within the church God is still stirring each of our hearts to respond to the need to complete the work of the tabernacle. Just like with this original tabernacle, in our churches today, the entire congregation is needed, each with unique skills and abilities. In order for the work to be completed each of us has to answer the call when God stirs our heart and puts us in a position to do the work.

Sometimes when we feel God stirring our heart, we just don’t have the desire to answer the call. Maybe we feel like we don’t have the time, the energy, or the ability to answer the call. Maybe we just don’t want to commit on a regular basis because we want our weekends free to do what we want to do. But just like in Exodus, without a total community effort, the tabernacle God is calling us to build, won’t be completed.

Dear Lord, Stir my heart to put You first and answer your call. Give me the understanding, energy, and time to do the work You call me to do and to just say “yes Lord” when You call me to do it.
